Homme House Wedding Photography

I love going to a wedding venue for the first time, and after having an hour long walk around plus meeting Charlie who along with his wife, run and live at Hommes House, I knew it was going to be a good one! Homme house is not only a great building with gorgeous grounds, it is run as a wonderfully personal service. Couples get the venue for the whole weekend and have real scope to cater and water their guests as they see fit. You certainly aren’t on a wedding production line here!

One of the benefits of doing the level of research I do is making any semi set-up shots achievable efficiently, saving you time away from your guests, but also it allows me to get cute images like this which need imagination and planning for, but easy to actually get.

Clare & Dean were very chilled (on the surface at least!) about the wedding planning, and also their wishes for the photography. They didn’t want awkward posed photos, preferring to get people being natural and enjoying the day. My kind of couple then!

One great thing about a venue like Homme House where everything is all under roof, is that not only is my photography time maximised, but I can also get a bit of everyone’s pre wedding prep, bride, groom plus guests arriving, along with capturing all the special details you spend so much time creating!

One of the most dramatic moments at a Homme House wedding is the first moment the bride and groom see each other. With them separated by two perfectly aligned doors, they are opened in sequence to spectacular effect and I’m not ashamed to say even brought a lump to my throat as Clare and her father made their way down the aisle. Clare going a step further with a tear rolling down her cheek which I was over the moon to have captured.

With the sun making an appearance the reception was held on the lawn as the fun really got underway! I had great fun shooting at distance getting some lovely, natural  moments, as well as a bit of socialising myself leading to some more amusing moments!

A great meal was served by Jacks kitchen (which I can vouch for having eaten far too much myself!),and before you know it, we’re into the evenings drinking curtesy of The Mobile Pub Co & Modern Vintage band with the tunes, giving a chance for me and my camera to let our hair down and join the fun!

I great day where Clare, Dean and their guests made me feel part of the party, and I’m so pleased they love the photos.

Genuinely Amazing

Clare & Dean-524

Lee was absolutely amazing from start to finish. From our initial call to when we met before the wedding and all throughout the wedding day. We had really wanted the photographs to be natural, capturing guests having a good time. It was important to us that we also got to enjoy our day and we didn’t want to be taken off for long periods for photo shoots. Lee took on board everything we said and he was so discrete during the wedding. He was in fact, so discrete I could hardly believe he managed to take all the photos he did! In just over a week, we had our photos back and they are genuinely amazing and we feel they have really captured the feelings we had on the day. It was great for us to relive some really special moments looking back at the photos. I would recommend booking Lee any day and I suspect he is going to get hugely popular very quickly! He clearly loves what he does and this is key to hiring anybody involved in a day as special as a wedding. You are 100% in safe hands with Lee.

Naomi & Tims Perfect Day

Naomi & Tims Perfect Day

Naomi & Tims Perfect Day

We arranged to meet for coffee and after an excited chat from us both I was delighted that Naomi (who I was to now call Nim as all her friends do) selected me to capture their wedding!

As part of the package it included an engagement shoot which Nim asked if we could do at Lower Slaughter where Tim proposed to her. So in one lovely July afternoon later (and by “lovely” I mean “changeable weather”) in just over an hour we snapped some great moments, and most importantly gave Nim & Tim (the amusement in rhyming names isn’t lost on them) a bit of experience in front of the camera, making it one less unknown on their wedding day! We also had a chat in the pub and got to know each other a little better, which I believe is so important in allowing me to capture people at their most natural, and telling the full story by knowing what has gone before in their lives

As always the day itself came around quicker than anyone expected, and I had the most fantastic time. Cambray Baptist Church provides amazing vantage points for a photographer! As you can see from the highlights below, I could get pretty much every angle, and produced a set of church photos that looks like it was snapped by 3 photographers not just 1!

We then headed off to one of my nearby secret hilltop locations to get some shots of Nim and Tim away from it all, and then quickly on to the reception at Winchcombe School.

After a delicious Nigerian influenced meal and the speeches it was time for dancing, but with a slight twist as everyone donned Nigerian outfits in honour of Nim’s Nigerian heritage. So much fun and even after 11 hours of shooting I was on the dance floor cutting some shapes with my camera in tow! I hope you enjoy the pics!

For the camera geeks, this wedding was shot with a Sony A99ii and for the first time my new Sony A7S. My usual lens arsenal of 14mm F2.8, 24-70 F2.8, 50mm F1.4 and 80-200 F2.8 were used, with flash only for the dancing with a mix of on camera and off camera flash.

Unique, Artistic & Beautiful

Lee photographed our wedding day. We loved his creativity and clear technical mastery, and our photos were unique, artistic, and beautiful. Lee gave 100% at every stage and his attention to detail was impressive, he managed to capture so many key moments during our wedding day and we are really glad that we chose him to photograph our special day.

Real Wedding Day Moments

Real Wedding Day Moments

Real Wedding Day Moments

Every wedding day is first and foremost about the star couple taking centre stage, but like every good movie there’s a supporting cast that add depth, context and variety.

Some of the most satisfying photographs I capture are those natural, real moment. Someone laughing, kids playing, a funny expression, or a moment in time that tells its own little story. These might not be the photos you’d put on a billboard to show your best work, but they are actually the images that a lot of couples love most from their day.

katie-phil-lee-hawley-photography-photographer-blaisdon-gloucestershire-wedding-venue-gallery-countryside-church-83_orig

I often hear “you were lucky to be in the right place at the right time for that one”, and sometimes yes there is a bit of good fortune involved, but a big part of it is reading the day, anticipating things unfolding, being where the action is before it happens.

katie-phil-lee-hawley-photography-photographer-blaisdon-gloucestershire-wedding-venue-gallery-countryside-church-112_orig

It’s a bit of a 6th sense photographers need to have whether you’re shooting a wedding, an awards ceremony or a sporting event, as first and foremost you need to know your subject matter like the back of your hand. Only then can you capture it perfectly. On top of photographing weddings I have been an usher 7 times, best man twice and I’m married, so I know weddings from all angles! Having that experience and knowledge is a huge benefit in getting the shot, but also in helping the wedding flow itself as in all reality I would have been to more weddings than anyone else there! I get all sorts of questions, everything from to “what side does the bride go down the isle” (it’s the right hand side if you’re following tradition), to “how do you remove a wedgy in a wedding dress?” (this one takes more explaining…).

wedding-photography-matara-centre-photographer-lee-hawley-photography-cotswolds-gloucestershire-cotswolds-photobomb_orig

The result of these experiences are some of the shots in this blog. Perhaps not the photos you’ll put on your wall, but probably the ones that’ll raise the biggest smile.

Thanks for reading

The little extras that matter

I always strive to give as much value to my couples as possible, which is why I commit to things like a 2 week turnaround times for the photos being ready, getting a few photos complete over the wedding night for you to wake up to them in your inbox next morning, and creating little slide show vids like the ones below.

It’s a lovely way of being able to watch the highlights of your days back without constantly clicking or swiping, plus by using music from your day it hopefully has a bit more meaning too!

And by using www.youtube.com you can share them with friends and family all over the world.

Here are just a few from the last couple of months.

Country weddings are familiar territory for me. I got married in the village where my wife was born and raised, which is the same story for Katie who married Phil this month.

katie-phil-lee-hawley-photography-photographer-blaisdon-gloucestershire-wedding-venue-gallery-countryside-church-409_2_orig

So much work went into the details, from the DIY hand carved place mats, to the incredible decoration transforming the village hall into a wedding venue!

With all the hard work done, the day itself was a wonderful laid back fun affair, with chilli, minimal speeches, a barn dance and BBQ! (am I focusing on the food too much?)

Lee was wonderful; he was on time, professional and full of energy. His photos are fantastically creative, as you can see from the albums, he really knows what he is doing. On the day he was not overbearing like I have seen some wedding photographers, he was working hard in the background. Our youngest bridesmaid is a big fan, Lee had her playing with a sparkler.

Cheltenham Park Hotel Wedding Fair Sept 10th 2017

Just likes buses, you wait ages for a wedding fair then 3 come along at once! This coming Sunday the 10th is my second of three fairs for September and is at the lovely Doubletree by Hilton Cheltenham Park hotel 11am – 3pm and hosted by wedding fayre experts Love Actually Weddings who host fairs all over the South West.I’ll be there with my new stand after a really busy fayre at the Cheltenham town hall, where I got to chat to dozens of couples and received some lovely feedback on my photos.
It’s always such a buzz to meet so many engaged couples. I love sharing my passion for what I do, and to hear and learn from what they are after from their wedding photography. Last Sunday was a blur and over before I knew it. My inbox has already made a few pings, so I am so excited to see who’s stories I get to tell next!
My short guide to how to choose a wedding photographer at a fair went down quite well, so I though i’d post it here again!Question – How many photo’s does each package include?Lee Hawley Photography Answer – My 10hr package supplies around 1000 fully edited images along with a slideshow to music.Q – How long does it take for me to get my photos back?LHP A – I have the full set available online within 2 weeks, with a couple of hero shots produced and emailed to you the day after the wedding so you can update your facebook profile right away! Q – What deposit and payment terms do you have?LHP A – I offer two payment plans to try and help as much as possible with spreading the costs or to make things nice and simple. You can see them and full package and pricing details here: Pricing & PackagesQ – Do I like the photographer?LHP A – A question for you this time. You will have this person at your wedding all day, and at all the really important moments too. Are you able to be relaxed around them in order for them to take the very best photos of you? Will you enjoy your day as much as you could if you don’t have a good rapport with them? A fayre is a great chance to chat to a few and see who passes your personality test!Q – What contact can we have to discuss ideas leading up to the wedding?LHP A – I am available on the phone or email an unlimited amount of times. If you have not made your mind up on a photographer yet, I will happily meet with you before you book to answer any nagging doubts you may have. We will also have a pre wedding consultation a month before the wedding, and I am available for a venue tour with you at any other time as well should you wish.Q – What sort of edit do you do to the images?LHP A – Where current trends seem to be for stylish but gloomy wedding photos, I edit to retain the colour, light and the joy of your wedding. You can see just a few examples here: Wedding Photos
Q – What do I physically get after the wedding?LHP A – I provide a DVD pack that includes your wedding highlights as a slideshow to music, which I also create a YouTube link for so you can share with friends and family. You get a USB with all the full resolution images, plus a compressed set to keep on your phone without using all your phones memory. Your full set of images will also be on a private page on my website, again as an easy way to share with friends. An example package can be seen here: Example PackageQ – How much are your albums?LHP A – My albums start from £300 for a 24 page album, and I can work with you to tailor an album to your specific budget or aesthetic requirements. Click here for an example album.Q – How many weddings do you do a month?LHP A – I do no more than 4 a month so that I can provide the most comprehensive, helpful and friendly service possible. I don’t run a production line. Every wedding is unique and deserves a tailored photography approach.
Q – Why are your prices what they are?LHP A – OK so this is not a very British question, and more likely this is a question to ask yourself rather than the photographer. If someone is very cheap, ask yourself why? Will they be using substandard kit? (for example my camera records to 2 SD cards at all times massively reducing chances of lost photos if a memory card fails. Just one of many precautions I take behind the scenes to reduce risk to an absolute minimum) Are they cheap because they only give you ¼ of the photos they take? (Editing images typically takes 2 hours for every hour shooting, so someone providing 500 photos rather than the 1000 I provide is saving themselves around 10 hours of work you are not benefiting from). There may well be a very valid reason they are cheap. They could be a talented new starter making their way into the industry, and as long as they’re honest about this and you like their photos then it’s a gamble well worth considering as everyone has to start somewhere. If someone is charging really big bucks, what extra are you getting for this? If you are blown away with their photos then that alone might make it worth it, but it’s well worth understanding the full service and make your own judgment on whether it’s good value.I hope this doesn’t sound too scary! My hope is this will give you a handle on what to look out for. It’s a tough decision as you need to be an expert in something you’ve never bought before! Which seems enormously difficult. New Logo & Website refresh

With a busy 2017 and bookings already coming in for 2018 I thought it was time to spruce up my website and get it more optimised for google.

The first stage was to get a new logo. I love doing as much of the work in my business as possible, but there are areas where it’s best to leave it to the experts! So a huge thank you to Fee Cole who has turned my terrible scribblings, and fussy requests into this beauty. I absolutely love it, I think it really reflects the joy and colour in how I approach photography, so I couldn’t be happier with it.

lee hawley photography chelternham gloucestershire wedding photographer logo design

I have given the rest of the website a bit of a cosmetic refresh too, with some new pages to showcase some of my other photography services including couples, families, pets, events and architectural photography. There is still more to do and ill be updating the site regularly over the next few weeks.

The second stage is to get the website visible on Google! Which sounds obvious but is something I have not invested in quite deliberately so far. I have a clear trajectory for Lee Hawley Photography that is a gradual upwards curve. I have seen enough small businesses to know too much too soon can result in unsatisfied clients by overreaching, and as my couples are my most important priority I have very much kept things at a controllable level. So from wedding fayres, recommendations and facebook I have had plenty to keep me busy.

However with time I have got significantly better and more efficient with my processes and planning, and I am now ready for a step up in interest, and google visibility is the obvious step.

Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the black art of the internet, and the choice is get someone to do it for you, have a stab yourself, or get educated and then do it yourself! I chose the latter and after a fantastically informative one to one training session with Andrew from www.magpieimage.co.uk I have learnt absolutely loads. I have many many evenings ahead of me now, updating behind the scenes details of the website, but can’t wait to get stuck in!

Let me know what you think of the new look!
