COVID Weddings

Personally

2020 has been a challenging year, no question about it. A year before the term COVID Weddings didn't exist. Everyone has their story to tell and has been impacted in their own varying way. On a personal level I have bee very lucky, with my family being relatively unscathed. Both my parents contracted COVID-19, and suffered pretty badly, but crucially survived, and the Hawley household remains healthy and happy.

Professionally

Professionally, it has been a rollercoaster! At the start of the year I had 60 weddings booked in for 2020, and by May nearly 50 had been postponed. But thanks to having completely wonderful couples, and by working together we have all got through it with stronger bonds than we had before.

Creative Opportunity

One gift of COVID has been the “micro-wedding”, or COVID wedding as they are often called. Even before this year, I was a bit of a specialist at weddings of small numbers, having done plenty before, and they take a specific approach as being one person of sometimes only 15 people, the photographer is a much larger presence than when there is 100 guests. The core of my photography style is to blend and mix in with the guests, which becomes even more valuable on these COVID weddings.

What we have seen is some couples scaling down their original numbers to fit the 15 or 30 person rules. But what we have also seen is couples getting married with a small reception to the limited numbers, and then postponing their big party to 2021 or 2022.

These wedding have been fantastic, and make no mistake about it, they are full on proper weddings! All the feels, and emotions, just as special as ever. A true honour to be part of. One other thing that has been great for me which is timelines that don’t follow a more traditional approach. This has allowed some unique photography opportunities that would never normally be possible, as well as allowing me to get back to doing what I love after 6 months off, has been really special.

I hope you enjoy the galleries below, and join me in taking your hat off to these bold, brave couples who got married in the middle of a pandemic!
